The problem with musical instruments is that they tend to be ‘big’ and can cramp up your living space. Many benefits from putting some of their instruments in storage, however, musical instruments are delicate and need to handled and stored with care to maintain their beautiful sound.
Climate Control
It is VERY important for your instruments to be stored in a temperature controlled storage facility. It can make all the difference in the world. Majority of the instruments stored are wood based, and that’ll mean humidity plays a large role. Any micro fissures will soon become giant cracks. Even metal instruments suffer since the different metal components expand and contract at different rates, putting strain on all the joints.
Additionally, the humidity in the summer can seep into the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies of your instrument. Over time, this leads to rust, corrosion, and mildew.
Clean Before you Store
This goes for practically anything you want to store in your unit. It is vital that the storage unit and your instruments are cleaned out thoroughly. Dust can accumulate in time, and it could lead to damaged instruments (this goes mostly for the metallic instrument since they are susceptible to rust)
Use Cases and Covers
To keep dust and moisture away from your instrument keep them in their cases when they’re being stored. Cases are relatively cheap, and they can substantially increase the lifespan of your instrument.
Keep Elevated
Its always a good idea to keep instruments away from the they ground. Use a platform or pallet; they can help insulate the instruments in winter times from the cold concrete floor. It also helps in a rare case of spills, leaks, or even rain your instruments will be far from the action.
